Patch, a term fundamental to landscape ecology, is defined as a relatively homogeneous area that differs from its surroundings. Patches are the basic unit of the landscape that change and fluctuate, a process called patch dynamics. From a patch dynamics perspective, populations, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes may all be studied effectively as mosaics of patches that differ in size, shape, composition, history, and boundary characteristics. Understanding our world and the communities that we make in these terms is fundamental to our practice, how we design, plan, and communicate the world in which we live.

We change the world one patch at a time.

Landscape Architecture | We believe that sound landscape design can change the world. We are a collaborative of landscape architects and designers with extensive professional experience with educational and institutional campuses, public transportation facilities, parks, and residential communities and estates.

Community Engagement | We believe that working together and listening to one another can change the world. We know that local knowledge is as important a feedback loop as are environmental sensors or dynamic models, yet we respect their value too. We translate the values of stakeholders into the language of engineers and contractors; and the technical knowledge of design professionals in to transparent and straightforward language easily understood by the general public.

Public Education | We believe that an educated public can change the world. We build campaigns that deliver simple and powerful messages to carefully identified audiences. We use data and GIS analysis to develop targeted communications strategies across appropriate forms of media.

Planning | We believe that planning and building resilient neighborhoods, districts, and corridors can change the world. We integrate land use and hazards data to provide clients with plans that can guide future development, while allowing for adaptation to an uncertain future.
